Who Started It ?Did you know that Father’s Day was started by a woman?  Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington was inspired by a  Mother’s Day sermon to honor her father William Jackson Smart for single-handedly raising Dodd and her 5 siblings after their mother died. The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19th, 1910 on the anniversary of William Jackson Smart’s birthday. Here are some interesting facts from Hallmark about Father’s Day-Father's Day is the 4th largest card-sending occasion with about 87 million cards given every year.-Fifty percent of all Father's Day cards are purchased for fathers and almost 15% for husbands.-Two top-selling categories are "Dad from Daughter" and "Dad From Both."-Rose is the official flower for Father's Day. Wearing a red rose signifies a living father, while white one represents deceased father. -Read Original Article
How will you celebrate your dad this Father's Day?  Unlike Mother's Day which is centered around us moms,  I think of  Father's Day as more of a family event where we gather to do something fun with dad.

I'm obviously not a dad but I can boldly say from my own experience with my dad that the greatest measure of his fatherhood was knowing that he was loved and that all his children were doing okay.  Even though I can't pick up the phone to call my dad this year, I'm grateful for the gift he gave my siblings and I last year.  You see, on the eve of June 8th, 2014, he called every single one of us and had long and heartfelt conversations. .  We talked about the kids, life and laughed and signed off with a "bye for now".   Little did I know it was bye forever because six hours later, I received the dreaded phone call that he had passed away.  As shocking and unexpected as this was,  he had done what every loving father would do.  He checked in with all his children and had the assurance that we were all okay, I have no doubt that he was at peace.

This Father's Day,  while celebrating my dad in spirit,  I will celebrate my husband, my brothers, my friends,  first time dads and the men who are father figures for so many children out there.

I hope you will also take time to do something fun for the fathers in your life.  Make a call, pop by for a visit,  go fishing, play golf,  simply spend time to let them know how much they are appreciated.

And just in case you're in the mood for more celebrations*, here are a few more dates in June that you can add to your list.

June 8      Best Friends Day

Administrative Professional's Week : April 19-25, 2015 (Admin Professionals Day – April 22)This was formally known as National Professional Secretaries Week and National Secretary's Day.  Harry F. Klemfuss of Young and Rubicam created this in 1952 as he recognized that the position was important and valuable to any business. Klemfuss was a PR expert and his initial goal was to encourage more women to become secretaries.  As a result of promoting the role of secretaries,  he also created the holiday to recognize them. As we well know, the name has changed over time as the role is no longer gender specific.  Today the term we are most familiar with is Administrative Professionals.  While the name has evolved, the importance of recognizing these “Rock Stars” on your team has not changed. Some of the most common ways of recognizing your Administrative Professional(s) today are: Flowers Cards, often with shopping gift certificates Assorted Gift Baskets Read Original Article

Can you believe it’s already February?  I had great plans for January but sadly, it just didn’t happen. Although I didn’t make any resolutions, I thought at the very least, I would send out a few thank you notes.  Thankfully,   I recently heard that January is the new February so I’m going with it.  How about you?  Are you ready to celebrate Valentine’s Day or are you one of the people who somehow forgets that Valentine’s Day is always on February 14th ?  Who is your valentine? Do you only have one valentine? What should you give your valentine? My answer is that Valentine’s Day is a perfect opportunity to show appreciation to the people you’ve been meaning to thank but haven’t gotten around to it yet.  What about your staff? Your tenants? Did you forget to thank some clients during the holidays? Is there a new prospect that you would like to reach out to?Here’s one way to get in on the Valentine’s Day train.  Send your existing clients a card or a small gift with the message “Love doing business with you”.  To your prospects send a small gift with the message “would love to do business with you”.As my mentor Debbie Quintana always says  “Your clients don’t wake up every morning thinking about you.  You have to remind them that you are here”. Love has everything to do with it.  If you love what you do and your clients love what you do for them,  you have found the perfect match. If you would like some help with gift ideas, we would be glad to help.  805-751-6177 or gifts@celebratesweetly.comHappy Valentine’s, now go on and spread some love.Read Original Article

Communication Overload There is no argument that technology has changed the way we do business today. It is fair to say that social networking affects every business. Today, customers can readily check Facebook, Yelp, Twitter  and so on for product reviews and make their decisions at lightning speed based on comments from friends, colleagues and even strangers.   Perhaps Tina Roth Eisenberg of Swiss Miss says it best when she describes her personal communication overload: “Too many channels. Too many messages. Too much noise. Too much guilt… The world sends me tweets, direct messages, texts, chats with me on Skype, sends me Facebook emails (!) and actual mail and also calls me… Responding on all these channels is a full-time job, extremely distracting and exhausting. I feel constantly behind.” I agree with Tina. After spending two hours yesterday afternoon deleting over 5,000 emails and unsubscribing from many publications, I have decided I need a new plan of action for the coming year. Herb Kelleher, former CEO of Southwest Airlines, says: “The business of people is people.” With the plethora of communication tools available to us today, we forget how important it is to                            actually make the human connection. It’s still okay to pick up a phone and talk to people. You might be surprised at the results. The gift of a kind word goes a long way, so I never hesitate when the opportunity arises to do just that. I recently read a newsletter that was very inspiring. I wanted to let the author know, so I sent him a thank you card. I don’t expect or need to hear back from him, but I thought it was important for him to know that his effort was appreciated. My goal is to reduce the mail in my inbox to less than 100 at any given time. I’m starting with a nightly purge of my inbox. Will let you know how that is going. That being said, we at Celebrate Sweetly are excited to share our newsletter with you. Sign up here  to let us... Every year at this time the cashier at the grocery store, bank teller, postal worker and pretty much everyone you come into contact with asks the same two  questions.

What are you doing for Thanksgiving? Will you be shopping on Black Friday?
My answers haven't changed since I pretty much do the same thing every year.
The day usually starts off with the kids watching the Macy's Parade followed by the National Dog Show.   As much as I try,  I end up getting pulled in to watch the parade and I can't deny that some of the doggies in the show are adorable.

The next part of the day is getting my brined  turkey ready for roasting, have each daughter make her side dish and oh yes, my husband gets to pull out the Christmas decorations.

Our day is pretty relaxed as we simply enjoy each other's company. On Black Friday,  our trip to the Janss Market Place is for one reason only ----watch Santa parachute in to mark the start of the holiday season.

Losing my dad this past Summer makes me truly treasure the special times I spend with my family.

Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving with your family. Read Original Article
