Looking ahead to those April showers and May flowers, one year into pandemic

Looking ahead to those April showers and May flowers, one year into pandemic

March of 2020 began over 365 days ago, and some of us feel like it never really ended. As we move into a new calendar month, though, it's a good time to try to shake off that perpetual-winter feeling and look forward to what April has to offer.

There's a holiday for everything, and April is chock-full of interesting, cute, or weird celebrations. For one, April is dedicated to both National Pet Month and National Soy Foods Month, so consider giving Rex a few extra pets and treats for the next thirty days while you nosh on some tofu and edamame--soy is a common dog allergen, though, so keep these celebrations separate!

In addition to April 1st being one of our monthly Synergy Business Connections meetings, sponsored by Harriet Cohen of Training Solutions, it's also April Fools Day (or in France, poisson d'avril--seriously, look it up!). We all knew about that famous holiday, but we didn't know it was also National Burrito Day! After that we get to celebrate National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day on April 2 and end the work week with World Party Day on April 3.

If you're into the craft brew scene, get ready for April 7, National Beer Day, and its companion holiday, New Beer's Eve. Try one of your local breweries; many are now offering delivery.

Not all the April holidays are goofy, of course. There's Tax Day on April 15, which we all look forward to, and Earth Day on April 22. April 23 is Day of Silence, in support of the daily struggles of LGBTQ youth. And April 20 is Chinese Language Day, an important reminder of the importance and beauty of every culture and language.

One holiday that you might want to celebrate with your business is National Volunteer Week, coming up April 18 through 24. If you have volunteers that help your business thrive all year, make a point to thank them this week. It's also a wonderful excuse to give back to your community by becoming a volunteer yourself. Check out the Points of Light website for some ways to celebrate by getting involved.

Want to learn about some other holidays? They're all at Nationaltoday.com.

04/27/2021 - Virtual Legislative Roundtable

Legislative Roundtable provides a setting for dialogue to take place on public policy issues and gives public agency staff, elected officials, their staff and businesses an opportunity to network. The meeting includes a guest speaker on a public sector topic and regular updates from our local cities, agencies, and elected officials.

Staff members provide brief reports from their prospective agencies to inform each other and members of the chamber of upcoming events or other items of interest.

This Month's Speaker: TBD

Consider attending this meeting if you:
  • Want to stay updated on local, state, and federal legislation and how it may affect your business.
  • Would like to network with public agency staff, elected officials and their staff, and other chamber members.
  • Have a general interest in public policy or local government.
  • All chamber members are welcome to attend!

Merley Greenidge of Celebrate Sweetly to host April 15 meeting

“Showing appreciation is a natural and important part of building business relationships,” says Merley Greenidge, owner of Celebrate Sweetly. “People do business with people they know, like, and trust.” Strengthening those relationships requires some effort, which is why businesses turn to Celebrate Sweetly for thoughtful, personalized gifts to mark special occasions and to thank employees and clients.
